LiMux meets Mitchell Baker

Last week Mitchell Baker made a short stopover at LiMux headquarters during her visit to Munich. She’s the chairperson of Mozilla Foundation and Mozilla Corporation. We invited her to have a cup of coffee with us and she agreed. Fine

Mitchell welcomed that Munich is using Firefox and Thunderbird for all of its 15,000 desktops for years now. A great achievement. The discussion was about the success of Firefox, the reasons why Thunderbird is behind the browser in popularity and the future of enterprise calendaring. During the coffee meeting the Linux-Magazin conducted a video interview, within Mitchell talks about many other topics.

After about one hour Mitchell left the relaxing coffee break to continue her Germany tour with the next stop, the Open Source Treffen München.

LiMux review 2009

Again one more year is over now and yes, it’s time to look back what has happened in 2009 in and around the LiMux project. That’s my personal look back, not neccessarily the one of the City of Munich.

There are again some rumors about LiMux’ dead here in Munich. I don’t want to comment on the origin of them, but to the responsible company: This doesn’t work out. LiMux is more alive than ever and the story goes on very well. Sure

To encounter the many rumors and anti-lobbying activities, I’m running my personal comments in this blog. And in 2009, I started an own category “LiMux questions” with the first article “Why did Munich choose free software“. Feel free to ask questions to me.

ODF as standard, OpenOffice.org everywhere

LiMux has achieved one very important goal. The open standard Open Document Format (ODF) is now Munich’s primary used internal document exchange standard, beside of PDF for non-editable documents. Congratulations to all, who made this great success happen! Our standard office workplace consists now of OpenOffice.org (Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw), Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird and many other sometimes needed apps like e.g. GIMP.

This achievement is not just replacing one office software by another. Well, every workplace is migrated to OpenOffice.org, but it was an almighty effort to be able to do this switch, to get rid of many vendor lock-ins created in the past. Over 20,000 templates have been consolidated and migrated, either to templates, macros or web apps. Most of them use our self developed free software WollMux to assist our employees in the administration’s template jungle. A number of business apps had to be adapted to use ODF instead of vendor locked-in Microsoft mechanisms.

SAP is one of them, one of the apps penetrating many of our business processes, the same like in other big companies/administrations. We did some self customizations to enable the communication with OpenOffice.org. And of course, we shared our experiences (at Linuxtag, thx to Uwe Hähle). We want to publish our customizations, but at the moment the SAP company is examining the legal aspect for some months now. We’ll see, if 2010 might be a break-through.

LiMux Basisclient pilots ready

Another achievement in 2009 was the establishment of linux client pilot areas inside every of our 12 departments. This was, beside the OpenOffice.org migration, the fundamental step to increase the drive for our client migration in general during the upcoming years. Yes, these are only small areas (together with our completely migrated departmetns round about 2,500 clients), but to get them up and running is important to be able to get a closer look into the IT infrastructures, the needed business apps and their interfaces inside of every single department (which invented the wheel for its own in the past). And of course, to train the IT staff step-by-step for this technical change.

LiMux’ Community Engagement

We try to be part of as many as possible events to actively share our experiences and to show: YES, Munich can! If interested, I try to put them into LiMux’ google calendar. We also started our inofficial twitter feeds or identi.ca dents. And I upload some of our talks at planetlimux.

Important for me was the winning of the German DebConf 2011 bid, so I hope to win the global bid in March 2010 and to welcome the Debian community in Munich in 2011.

We’re also part of the Open Source Meeting, a new event created by OpenOffice.org and Mozilla in Munich, which will take place every month from 2011 and targets interested beginners and professional free software enthusiasts as well. @Florian and Carsten: good job, go on!

Of course, I have to mention our WollMux. This year we started the WollMux Roadshow together with DBI company and the Linux Solutions Group (LiSoG), including events in Munich, Stuttgart and Hamburg. It’s like a promotion tour for OpenOffice.org as basis, WollMux for template management and Munich as the one bringing both together. Every event got well criticisms and we’re planning to go on next year.

Improving ODF as leading open standard was the goal of the first ODFplugfest in The Hague. I took part to get an impression of things moving in this (former) battlefield and I was amazed about the team work done there.

We’re committed to give others back our experiences after 2 years of office migration and we took part in the first OpenOffice.org congress of Economy and Administration in Wiesbaden, and we also joined the OOoCon in Orvieto later this year.

LiMux – the upcoming future

The whole project will be adapted during the next months for the final big step, the client migration in general. Some improvements and optimizations in the project structure, to learn from the past and be ready for continuing the success story.

For me there is a big change, a good one in my opinion. From 2010 on I will be responsible for just one topic: Munich’s external IT communication and relationships, especially in the field of open standards and free software. Yes, I worked on this topic also during the last years, but from now, it’s the only one I can improve in a more general view, not only with LiMux as focus. Interesting times ahead for me

Free software for Munich’s absent employees

Wow. I’m back from an evening event for employees beeing absent from duty, which took place in our old city hall. Of course, topics like successful come-back, possibilities of home-work and so on were much more important for the visitors, but for me it was quite impressive that many questions asked at our LiMux booth were “how can I become familiar with OpenOffice.org or Linux at home, before starting to work again”.

There were nearly no fears about the “new” desktop software the employees would have to use after their return; they are actively willing to use free software at home, like they will do at their offices in Munich.

That’s a great achievement, on the one hand side of our project including the manifold training offerings, the communication strategy and the strong support by our management. But it’s also an earning of the many free software communities and developers, improving the look and feel and the handling of “their” software during the last years.

Would you have expected, that common people with nearly no IT background are talking about free software as a real choice? That these people want to use free software at home? Not just due to the fact that they can save license fees, but because they want to use the software their employer have chosen for reasons they also agree, like independence and freedom.

That’s imho a huge progress, but also a reminder for us not to become carelessly in the future. It’s worth working on this item

To celebrate the move to our new office building, there will be another Debian Bug Sqashing Party! The event will take place from 27.11. to 29.11. Here is the Google Maps link. The BSP starts on Friday afternoon at about 17:00.

As always, everybody with moderate Unix skills is welcome to participate. Some Debian or programming knowledge is also desirable.

For Debian Newbies, there will be a packaging introduction on Friday evening. Please be prepare your Notebooks for a Wireles LAN setup, as we're still not done with the cabling after our move to the new office building last week.

Last, but not least i'm glad we will be able to sponsor some pizza for the hungry developer crowd ;-)

LiMux at Kieler Linux und Open Source Days

This is a short summary of my first visit to the Kieler Linux und Open Source Days in Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany's north.

Kieler Linux und Open Source Days is a regional exhibition and conference aiming at new users of Free Software and GNU/Linux in particular. The conference takes place in the "KITZ" (Kiel Center of Innovation and Technology) which is currently home to more than sixty companies (closed- and open source).

While Floschi attended the OpenWorldForum , i happily accepted to give the keynote in Kiel, talk about LiMux, Linux in general and last but not least: Do some networking.

The keynote went pretty well, not to mention the fact that OO Impress ate some of the pics in my presentation. Some extra laughs for the audience ;-)

Many pepole were interested in the details of our project, what the main problems are and how we solved them. I got some nice input and hours of chat and discussion flew by so fast it was a blur! The Wollmux was interesting to some attendees, also. One might think the Wollmux userbase will grow soon.

LiMux für Studenten aus Washington

Zugegeben: Anfragen Externer, die sich im direkten Kontakt über das Projekt LiMux informieren möchten, sind keine Seltenheit. Besuche von Studenten aus Washington, der Heimat eines großen Softwarehauses aus Redmond, schon eher. 35 Studenten besuchten das Projekt im Rahmen ihres Explorationsseminares, einer Kooperation von Studenten der University of Washington und der Technischen Universität München. Heißt im Klartext: nicht nur wir wurden im Vorfeld in die Pflicht genommen und waren mit Vorbereitungen beschäftigt, sondern auch die engagierten Studenten waren gefordert. Sie wurden in „Lead Teams“ eingeteilt, die für die Vorbereitung inhaltlich und organisatorisch zuständig waren. So wurde die Gruppe schon im Vorfeld intensiv auf das jeweilige Thema des Tages vorbereitet – denn neben der Stadtverwaltung München standen im Rahmen des mehrwöchigen Seminars unter anderem Besuche bei BMW, Siemens und dem FC Bayern München auf dem Programm. Direkt vor dem Besuch wurden wichtige Informationen und Eckpunkte ins Gedächtnis gerufen.

Als Votrags“raum“ hatten wir das Glück, mit dem Großen Sitzungssaal des Münchner Rathauses (BILD) aufwarten zu können, der in den ersten Minuten die volle Aufmerksamkeit der Teilnehmer auf sich lenkte.

Aber auch die Vortragenden zogen die Studenten schnell in ihren Bann:

Florian Schießl, der für einen allgemeinen Überblick über das Projekt LiMux sorgte
Christoph Lutz, der mit Erfahrungen und interessanten Hintergrundinformationen aus der WollMux-Entwicklung glänzte und
Florian Maier, der bei den Studenten Lust aufs Programmieren im LiMux-Team weckte.

Im Anschluss an die Vorträge folgte jeweils ein Block mit Fragen und Antworten, der von den Studenten gut ausgefüllt wurde – sicherlich auch, weil es für die Studenten nach Rückkehr gilt, einen Abschlussbericht zu schreiben. Nachdem der Wissenshunger für diesen Tag schließlich gestillt war, gab es es noch typisch bayerische Butterbrezen sowie einen exklusiven Blick vom Balkon des Münchner Rathauses.

Spannend ist die Frage, ob die Freiheit der Software und das Streben der Stadtverwaltung nach Unabhängigkeit oder das eindrucksvolle Ambiente des Münchner Rathauses in Erinnerung bleiben. Wir hoffen auf beides und begrüßen die interessierten Studenten jederzeit gerne wieder bei uns.

MiniHowTo Debian Paketbau auf Buildserv

Für einen Kollegen eine Mini-Anleitung, wie Pakete auf dem Buildserver gebaut werden:

Als Beispiel das mono-Paket.

Folgende Dateien auf den Buildserver in das eigen Homeverzeichnis kopieren:

mono_2.0.1.orig.tar.gz
mono_2.0.1-1.diff.gz
mono_2.0.1-1.dsc

Dann kann der Bauvorgang angeschmissen werden:

sbuild -d halut -A -s mono_2.0.1-1.dsc

Wenn das erfolgreich durchgelaufen ist erhällt man zusätzlich folgende Dateien:

mono_2.0.1-1_i386.deb
mono_2.0.1-1_i386.changes

Damit ich die Paket auch in unsere Paketverwaltungverwaltung hochladen kann, muss ich die Pakete signieren:

debsign -k[Schlüssel-ID] mono_2.0.1-1_i386.changes

Nun kann ich die Pakete an die Paketverwaltung übergeben:

dupload -t limux-buildserv mono_2.0.1-1_i386.changes

Damit würde im nächsten Release das mono Paket enthalten sein.

DebConf9 - Abschlussbericht

Habe teilweise begriffen wovon die Beatles in "I'm so tired" singen: DebConf!

Neben vielen guten Talks, BoF's und Gesprächen (Planetlimux berichtete bereits) waren wir einen Tag lang in der extremaduraschen Hitze unterwegs, feierten in meinen Geburtstag auf der Cheese & Wine party und liessen uns die Altstadt von Caceres professionell zeigen.

Das positive Feedback auf die Vorstellungen unserer Ideen zur Verteilung virtueller Maschinen und dem wine-app-packager motiviert zu einem weiteren Anlauf auf die Debain Maintainerschaft.

Obwohl das bosnische DebianTeam (in gutem deutsch) für Sarajevo als DC11 Austragungsort argumentierte, bin ich für Germany! :)

DebConf9 Caceres pre-review

After 8 days of hacking, hours of hours filled with interesting talks, insightful discussions and a mix of Debian packaging with git, i'm finally sitting in one of the last talks of this years DebConf9. I would like to say a big "thank you" to the local team and other people involved.

You did a great job and it was (just as expected) a very inspiring event!

Releasekandidat 2 des LiMux Basisclients 2.2.0

Release 2.20RC2 unseres LiMux Basisclients wurde bereitgestellt. Dieser Releasekandidat ist für die dezentrale Qualitätssicherung vorgesehen. Der Fokus bei Release 2.2.0 liegt eindeutig auf Fehlerbehebung und Stabilisierung.

Obwohl bisher 63 Änderungsanträge für 2.2.0RC2 bearbeitet wurden, sind fast keine neuen Features enthalten. Im Kern ist der Basisclient gleich geblieben. Einige Fachapplikationen wurden auf aktuelle Versionen aktualisiert wie zum Beispiel unser Wollmux auf Version 5.6.1a.

Der aus meiner sicht wichtigste Bugfix betrifft das Paket slapd, welches für unseren lokalen LDAP-Cache benötigt wird. Die vorhergehenden Versionen enthielten einen Fehler, der dafür verantwortlich war, dass bei bestimmten LDAP-Anfragen der lokale slapd abstürzte. Dies hatte unangenehme Auswirkungen auf den Basisclient, da lokale LDAP-Anfragen z.B. zur Authentifizierung verschiedener Dienste nicht mehr funktionierten. "Einfrierende" Basisclients waren die folge. Dieser Fehler wurde nun behoben.

Auch an unserem LiMux-Verteilserver wurde mehrere Fehler behoben.

Insgesamt wurden 148 Debianpakete aktualisiert und 23 neu im LiMux-Repository aufgenommen.

Die finale Version 2.2.0 ist aktuell für Mitte August avisiert.

Linuxtag 2009

Auch dieses Jahr waren wir wieder auf dem Linuxtag 2009 vom 24.06.bis 27.06.in Berlin vertreten. Auf einem Gemeinschaftsstand mit dem Auswärtigen Amt, dem BSI und der BIT präsentierten wir das Projekt LiMux.

Auf großes Interesse ist dabei unser Wollmux gestoßen. Verschiedene Behörde, öffentliche Einrichtungen aber auch Firmen haben uns in Gesprächen mitgeteilt, dass sie den Wollmux bereits getestet haben oder demnächst testen wollen. Der WollMux ist unter der European Union Public License (EUPL) lizensiert und kann vom Open Source Observatory and Repository der EU (OSOR) heruntergeladen werden.

Neben dem "normalen" Messegeschehen haben wir interessante Gespräche mit den Kollegen vom Auswärtigen Amt und vom Landesvermessungsamt Rheinland-Pfalz geführt. Dabei ging es vor allem um die gemeiname Lösung von Aufgabenstellungen wie z.B. die Vorkonfiguration von KDE-Desktops oder der Verteilung und Pflege von virtuellen Maschinen.

Nette Neuigkeiten im Limux Basisclient 2.1.0

Im Release 2.1.0 unseres Limux Basisclients wurde auch die GOsa Version aktualisiert. von 2.6.0 auf 2.6.4. Dabei haben sich natürlich auch wieder einige Dinge verändert. Eine Änderung möchte ich ich hier vorstellen.

Im Bereich Softwareverteilung werden alle verfügbaren FAI-Klassen eines Releases aufgelistet. Nun gibt es häufig verschiedene FAI-Klassen-Typen (Partitionstabellen, Paketlisten usw.) mit dem selben Namen. Diese wurden bisher immer alle serparat aufgelistet.

In GOsa 2.6.4 werden gleichnamige FAI-Klasse zusammengefasst und die einzelnen Typen über Symbole dargestellt. Zum Bearbeiten einer FAI-Klasse kann man nun wie gehabt auf den Klassen-Namen klicken und erhält dann eine Auswahlmöglichkeit welchen Klassentypen man ändern möchte, oder man klickt direkt auf das jeweilige Symbol.

Ich halte das für eine sinnvolle Änderung, welche die Übersichtlichkeit deutlich verbessert.

Schön war's in Argentinien!

Die Debian Artwork arbeiten sind fortgeschritten, der GPG Key ist von einigen Debian Developern gesigned (ohne Signing von DD's keine Maintainerschaft), viele Leute wurden kennen gelernt, geschlafen haben wir wenig und die IT des AA und deren User haben wir auch gesehen.

DebConf8 Tag2

Nachdem in Steve McIntyres Talk am Sonntag unter anderem ein Mangel an "Debian Art" beklagt wurde, baue ich jetzt Vorschläge für Usplash Theme, KDM-Theme, GDM-Theme, Splash und Wallpaper für Lenny :)
Der erste Wurf ist schon fertig.

Um die eigenartigen Schlafzeiten besser zu verkraften habe ich mir außerdem ein Mate Töpfchen + Tee gekauft. Das Zeug schmeckt laut Wiki wie "Kaffee + Grüner Tee + Tabak + Eiche" und hat auch diese Wirkung.
